WHO CHECKS ON THE STRONG ONE?
For the one everyone leans on: being strong was never supposed to mean carrying it all alone.
You're the one they call.
The listener. The fixer. The steady one. When somebody's world falls apart at midnight, your phone lights up — and you answer. You always answer.
You know exactly what to say to someone who's breaking. You've talked friends through their worst days. You've held people together with both hands.
So nobody thinks to ask how you're doing.
Not because they don't love you. Because you made it look easy. You've been steady for so long that even the people closest to you believe the steady version is the whole story.
And here's what nobody tells you: being everyone's shelter doesn't make you rain-proof. It just means you get soaked in silence.
You minimize it. Other people have it worse. I can handle it. They need me more than I need help. You've said those exact words this month. Maybe this week.
The strong one isn't the one who never breaks. The strong one is the one nobody ever thought to check on.
But strength was never supposed to mean solitude. The weight you help everyone else put down — you're allowed to put yours down too. The grace you hand out for free? Some of it belongs to you.
So here's your permission slip, in writing: you're allowed to call somebody first. You're allowed to say actually, I'm not okay and let the silence sit there until someone helps you fill it. You're allowed to be carried for once. Tell one person the true version — a friend, family, anyone you trust. You've spent years proving people can lean on you. Let somebody prove you can lean back.
If you don't know where to start, start small. Write it down on the journal wall — say the thing you've been swallowing. Sometimes the first honest sentence is the door out.
And if you're reading this as one of the lucky ones — someone with a strong one in your life — check on them tonight. Ask twice. The first answer is a reflex. The second answer is real.
To the one who holds everyone else up: you are not alone. Keep moving forward.
