SOME GOODBYES NEVER GET SAID
On missing people who are still alive — the friendships that faded without a fight, and how to carry that quiet grief.
Nobody warns you about this kind of grief.
The kind where the person is still alive. Still out there. Still posting, still laughing in someone else's photos. You could text them right now. But you won't. And they won't either.
There was no fight. No betrayal. No moment you can point to and say that's where it broke. The messages just got shorter. The replies got slower. Life got loud, and somewhere in the noise, you both stopped reaching.
And now there's this strange ache you don't have a name for. You miss someone you could technically call. You mourn someone who didn't die. You scroll past their name and feel something twist, and then you keep scrolling, because what would you even say?
Here's what nobody tells you: this is grief too. It counts. You don't need a funeral to earn the right to miss someone.
Some people don't leave your life. They just quietly stop arriving in it. And you're allowed to grieve the space they left.
Maybe some of those people were meant for a season. Maybe they carried you through a chapter you couldn't have survived alone, and the story simply moved on. That doesn't erase what they were. Not every ending is a failure. Some are just endings.
But maybe — maybe — there's one name that keeps surfacing. One person your mind keeps circling back to. If reading this put a face in your head, that might be your answer. Send the text. Not a paragraph. Not an apology tour. Just: hey, I was thinking about you. The worst that happens is silence, and you're already living in that.
And if the door stays closed? Then let it be closed gently. Thank them in your heart for who they were to who you used to be. Write it down somewhere — the journal wall is there for exactly this — and let the weight get a little lighter for having been named.
You didn't fail those friendships. You were both just humans, doing your best, drifting on currents neither of you chose. Missing them means it was real. And real things are never wasted.
You are not alone. Keep moving forward.
