YOU MISS WHO YOU USED TO BE

The version of you that laughed easier isn't gone — you buried them to survive, and what's buried can be dug back up.

There's a photo of you somewhere from a few years back. You're laughing at something. Your eyes are lighter. You didn't know yet how heavy things would get.

And when you find it now, something in your chest folds. Because you barely recognize that person. They dreamed louder. They trusted easier. They hadn't learned yet to brace for the worst.

You miss them. You miss you.

Nobody warns you that you can grieve someone who's still alive — that the loss can be your own reflection. That you can lie awake mourning the version of you that hadn't been let down yet, hadn't gone quiet, hadn't started counting the exits in every room.

Life happened. People left. Things you built came apart. And somewhere in all of it, you got quieter. More careful. You called it growing up. Some nights it feels more like going dim.

You didn't lose that person. You buried them to survive. And what gets buried can still be dug back up.

Here's what the ache is actually telling you: that softer, brighter version isn't dead. You wouldn't miss them if they were gone — you'd feel nothing. The missing is the proof that they're still in there, under all the armor you had to build.

You don't have to become exactly who you were. That's not how it works, and honestly, you're stronger now than they ever had to be. But you can carry the best of them forward — the laugh, the hope, the openness — into whoever you're becoming next.

Start small. Do one thing today that the old you loved and the tired you forgot. The song. The walk. The dumb joke. The phone call. Let a little of that light back through the door.

You're not a worse version of yourself. You're a wounded one — and wounds close. The person you miss and the person you're becoming can be the same person. You just haven't introduced them to each other yet.

And if the weight ever gets too heavy to hold on your own, say it out loud to someone you trust. You were never meant to carry a whole self in silence.

If you need to set it down somewhere first, the journal wall is always open.

You are not alone. Keep moving forward.
